This article examёines the pre-expert evaluation of materials in road accident cases as an independent stage of interaction between the investigator and the automotive expert, preceding the decision to appoint a forensic automotive (or other) examination. The effectiveness of expert support in criminal road accident cases depends not only on the existence of expert methods but also on the completeness and admissibility of forensically significant information collected and analyzed prior to the decision to appoint a forensic examination. It is proposed to understand the pre-expert evaluation as a comprehensive preliminary study of case materials, trace evidence, and seized objects, including digital data sources, conducted by the investigator independently and in collaboration with a specialist to determine the feasibility of conducting a forensic examination, select its type, formulate questions, and ensure the sufficiency of the materials provided. It is concluded that the inclusion of pre-expert assessment in the tactics of appointing forensic examinations in cases of road accidents allows for a reduction in the number of unfounded, additional and repeated expert examinations, an improvement in the quality of obtaining initial data and a more rational use of the potential of forensic units.
