Introduction. The article, based on the memoirs of veterans of the forensic service and the analysis of published regulatory documents and literature, presents the historical aspects of the creation and development of the fire-technical direction in the forensic units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, and provides the main stages of development. The most significant results of forensic activities are presented. Materials and methods. The materials of the study were scientific articles, departmental acts of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the USSR and the Russian Federation, archival documents, and memoirs of veterans of the forensic service. The study used the dialectical method, analyzed scientific, historical, and regulatory sources, used methods of generalizing and grouping data, as well as the comparative legal, historical and legal method. The results of the study. The results of the study made it possible to establish the chronology of the creation and development of the fire-technical direction in the forensic units of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs and to identify specific individuals who made the greatest contribution to the development of this area. The most significant results of expert-criminalistic activity in the field of forensic fire-technical expertise were revealed. Findings and conclusions. The analysis made it possible to assess the current state of the fire-technical area in the system of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia and determine the vector of its further development, in particular through the introduction of the most advanced technical means when conducting an inspection of a fire scene and examining material evidence.
