The article deals with the initial stage of formation and development of normative legal regulation of one of the measures of criminal procedural coercion such as temporary removal of a suspect or accused from office. The normative legal acts of the X-XVII centuries are analyzed, according to which it is possible to trace the origin of measures of procedural coercion in the form of suspension. The author concludes that the period from the publication of the first written monument “Russian Truth” to the adoption of the Charter of criminal justice should be considered as the initial stage of the development of suspension from office.
