In today's world, countering extremism is a key area of national security for the Russian Federation. This article examines the quantitative indicators of extremist crimes over the past ten years and identifies key trends in their transformation. It also examines current qualitative changes in this criminal phenomenon, such as the active use of the Internet, high levels of secrecy, and its transnational nature. The authors define a critical investigative category, forensic characteristics, and describe their structure for the crimes in question. The article analyzes the method of commission, a key element of forensic characteristics. A typical list of actions that comprise the preparation, commission, and concealment of these crimes is presented. Its impact on the investigation of extremist crimes is determined. The criminal's personality is also an important element of forensic characteristics and is given special attention, both in the context of their key characteristics and through recommendations for interrogation. This article analyzes the mechanism of trace generation for this group of crimes, classifies typical traces, and provides recommendations for working with digital traces. A special section is devoted to the context and motives of extremist crimes and their impact on the detection and investigation of this group of crimes. Understanding the nature and content of extremist crimes is crucial for developing methods for their detection and investigation.
